Family fun day focuses on preventing child sexual abuse in Ceredigion, and culminates in balloon release

(July 26, 2013) Two organisations committed to making the lives of children better will put preventing child sexual abuse firmly on the agenda this week by hosting an awareness and prevention family fun day. The one day event taking place at Cardigan Leisure Centre today (Friday, July 26) will be attended by Julie Morgan AM, Chair of the Cross Party Group on Children.

The event is a collaboration between the national child sexual abuse prevention campaign Stop it Now! Wales and Jig-So Children’s Centre, Cardigan, and marks the fourth anniversary of Stop it Now! Wales.

Attendees include:- Julie Morgan AM; Mr Tim Burton, Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner for Dyfed Powys; Mr Parry Davies, Strategic Director – Care, Protection and Lifestyle and Chair of the Local Safeguarding Children Board, Ceredigion County Council and Chief Inspector Angela Reed, Dyfed Powys Police.

Activities throughout the event (11am-2pm) include face painting, outdoor games, mobile making with Welsh Women’s Aid, mini sports, activities from various organisations and a design a balloon competition.

The day will culminate in a charity balloon race to celebrate the fourth anniversary of Stop it Now! Wales. The balloons carry contact numbers for Jig-So and the Stop it Now! Helpline. They cost £1 each and are environmentally friendly. Local Florist in Cardigan, Pink Orchid, has donated the helium. Prizes for the furthest balloon travelled that is returned include, among other things, a hamper of “goodies” and a family ticket to Folley Farm Adventure Park and Zoo.

Multi-agency staff from across Ceredigion who work with children or families are also expected to attend.

Julie Morgan AM Chair of the Cross Party Group on Children said:

I’m delighted to take part in this event organised by the Stop it Now! Wales campaign.

“It’s so important that the issue of sexual abuse of children is highlighted and is brought out into the open so that we can discuss it and debate how we can best come together to stop it.”

National Manager of Stop it Now! Wales Rebecca Morgan said:

“Sexual abuse affects more children than we would like to think – at least one in ten across Wales. Events like this, where we get to raise awareness of the problem and talk about what can be done to prevent abuse from happening in the first place, are really important.

“Stop it Now! Wales is celebrating four years of working to protect children from sexual harm and campaigning for more emphasis on prevention in government policy.

“When we launched in 2009, our public survey told us that 70 per cent of people in Wales wanted to know more about child sexual abuse. Since then we have delivered over 400 awareness raising and education sessions and courses to over 4000 parents and carers across Wales. Calls to the Stop it Now! helpline have increased steadily year upon year and we continue to expand and support both the current child and family workforces as well as the workforces of the future in taking a pro-active approach to protecting children and young people from sexual harm.”

Linda Grace, Jig-So Chair of Trustees said:

“It is a privilege to be working in partnership with Stop it Now! Wales on this vitally important campaign on preventing the sexual harm of children.

“This work has added a significant dimension to the work Jig-So delivers in support of families throughout Ceredigion and other communities.

“Both parents and professionals consistently tell us how much they value the opportunity to discuss this issue and how to gain access to other resources of support.”

The Stop it Now! campaign operates a Freephone confidential helpline – 0808 1000 900 – which people can call for advice and support in relation to child sexual abuse issues.

Residents of Ceredigion and the surrounding areas can access further information on protecting children from sexual abuse from the Parents Protect! website – www.parentsprotect.co.uk

New report shows more than half of parents and carers do not feel confident to protect their children from sexual abuse – while calls for help relating to protecting children continue to rise

July 17th 2013:  Six out of ten (59%) parents and carers are not as confident as they would like to be when it comes to protecting their children from sexual abuse. And if they had concerns only 70% would feel confident to act upon or report these concerns.  7.7 million families have dependent children in the UK[1] which could mean 4.5 million families are lacking the confidence to protect their children.

The only UK-wide charity dedicated solely to tackling child sexual abuse, The Lucy Faithfull Foundation, reveals the figures in a new report from its Stop it Now! UK and Ireland Campaign and Helpline.

Data was collected from 2,303 parents and carers who Stop it Now! worked with between October 2012 and March 2013. Parents and carers were asked to rate their confidence levels in a number of areas before attending a seminar on child sexual abuse prevention. Findings show:

·        Prior to the workshop only 41% of parents and carers rated themselves as ‘confident’ or ‘very confident’ about being able to keep their children safe from sexual abuse. Post-workshop this almost doubled to 79%

·        Prior to the workshop only 70% of parents and carers stated they felt ‘confident’ or ‘very confident’ about acting on, or reporting, any concerns they may have about child sexual abuse. Post workshop this had risen to 92%

·        Prior to the workshop, only 27% of parents and carers stated they felt ‘confident’ or ‘very confident’ about being able to spot signs of sexual abuse in their child’s behaviour. Post workshop this almost trebled to 79%

·        Prior to the workshop only 13% of parents and carers felt ‘confident’ or ‘very confident’ about spotting potentially concerning behaviour in an adult. Post workshop 69% rated themselves as ‘confident’ or ‘very confident’

The findings are contained in the Stop it Now! UK and Ireland Helpline and Campaign ten year report, which also shows that calls to the confidential resource climbed from 1,024 in 2003 to 5,676 in 2012. Over the last three years the number of callers has increased at an average rate of 24% each year as the public has become more aware of the Helpline’s existence and as public concern about child sexual abuse has risen.

Calls fall into three main categories of caller:- adults concerned about their own sexual thoughts or behaviour (38%); family, friends and other adults concerned about the behaviour of another adult (27%) and parents and carers concerned about a child or young person’s sexual behaviour (6%). Other callers include adults concerned about children who may have been abused (5%), professionals seeking case advice (13%) and adult survivors of sexual abuse (7%).

Donald Findlater, Director of Research and Development with the Lucy Faithfull Foundation and Director of Stop it Now! UK and Ireland said:

“Our report clearly shows that while adults can and do take action to protect a child when they know where to go for help, many are not sure of what to look for and what action they can take if they do have concern. The Stop it Now! Helpline is one of the few places they can go for confidential, expert help, and growing numbers of adults are using the service.

“Child sexual abuse affects one in six children in the UK. Whilst it often hits the headlines, this is typically only after harm has been done. It is a scandal that so little is done to prevent abuse before it happens. Sadly the Parents Protect! sexual abuse prevention seminars, which achieved so much in improving the knowledge and confidence of those best placed to protect their children, have lost funding from the Department of Education, despite on-going demand. The Governments of Scotland and Wales continue to fund Parents Protect work for their parents and carers.

“If we are to take the problem of child sexual abuse seriously, we must behave as if prevention were a possibility. At present it feels like we are resigned to the fact that lots of our children are being abused and we simply wring our hands after the next publicised tragedy. This does nothing to stop it happening and it does even less for the thousands of children suffering abuse in silence.

“We need a public education campaign on the same scale as the drink drive and child obesity campaigns. We need Government to take a comprehensive look at services to prevent abuse from happening as well as to respond appropriately after it has happened – and we need all of this yesterday. Our children deserve nothing less.”

Peter Saunders, Chief Executive of the National Association for People Abused in Childhood, said:

“’The majority of adult survivors of sexual abuse who contact the NAPAC support line tell us they were abused by someone they knew.

“It is absolutely vital that parents and carers are confident about what to look for and what to do if they have concerns. It is not up to children to protect themselves and we know very few children disclose the abuse that is happening to them at the time.

“Parents, carers, family members and other protective adults are best placed to protect children but they must be informed and able to seek help and take action if they have concerns.”

The Helpline and Campaign report covers ten years of pioneering work to protect children from sexual abuse. It concludes by stating that to really tackle child sexual abuse in the UK, Government needs to adopt a comprehensive approach to prevention.

The Stop it Now! Helpline is currently the subject of an independent evaluation funded by the EU and conducted by NatCen Social Research, Britain’s largest independent social research organisation. Due to conclude in Spring 2014, the evaluation will inform the development of similar sexual abuse prevention helplines elsewhere in Europe.

New software to protect vulnerable children online to be piloted in Surrey

May 14, 2013: New software designed to help parents and carers of vulnerable children keep their children safe on the internet is set to be trialled in Surrey.

The project, being run by the Epsom based child protection charity, the Lucy Faithfull Foundation, will involve 25 families taking part in a two month trial of computer monitoring software, developed by software company Securus, based in Hersham. The software is programmed to monitor computer activity and record instances of concern, for example, inappropriate content such as sexual material, indications of grooming occurring or bullying situations. It contains a number of ‘libraries’ which allow it to identify worrying or concerning text or images on the computer screen – either online or offline and if something is identified, it takes a screen shot which can then be reviewed by an adult and appropriate action taken.

The charity is working with a number of Surrey based Special Educational Needs Schools to pilot the software with 25 families but has some places left for other families across the county.

Director of Research and Development at the Foundation, Donald Findlater said:

“As we have been hearing in the news today, the internet can pose real risks to children. Statistics from the the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (Ceop) show that in the last 12 months they received 18,887 reports of abuse, that’s 14% more than the previous year.

“Research we conducted into internet safety and children with Special Educational Needs showed that many pupils with Special Educational Needs are regular internet users but have a limited understanding of the potential dangers to their safety they face online.

“While filtering and blocking software has a role to play in keeping children safe, it wouldn’t pick up on grooming behaviour on Facebook, for example. This software will. We hope it will prove to be an important additional tool for parents and carers who want to keep their children safe online.”

The research report, Internet Safety and Children with Special Education Needs, found that:

 ·         Special Educational Needs children are using technology in much the same way as other children, albeit there was some evidence of less extensive use of the internet and they appear to engage in social networking at a later age. They often seek friendships online as they are often isolated from their local communities.

·         Mainstream technology providers who cumulatively create the online environment have made little if any allowance for users who may have learning and behavioural difficulties.

·         Messages about online safety have been received by the children but were not necessarily well understood or applied to the range of online contexts that is desirable.

·         Basic terminology such as ‘social networking’ and ‘privacy settings’ were not meaningful to most of the children studied.

·         The children may struggle to anticipate and respond to risks involving deceit, may respond to inappropriate requests (perhaps repeating inappropriate behaviour) and may become obsessive in their online activities.

·         Teachers lacked confidence that the children would or were able to implement their self-protective strategies sufficiently; and some parents lacked confidence in their own knowledge and skills to provide a safe online environment at home.

·         Online risks are unlikely to materialise in the school environment due to the filtering, monitoring and supervision that is in place here. By far the greatest risk for children with special educational needs, as with other children, is when they are at home or at the home of a friend or relative.

·         Parents lacked up-to-date knowledge, not only of the risks and of their management, but also of the different ways in which children engage with technology.

Director of Research and Development at the Lucy Faithfull Foundation added:

“This study showed that we have a cohort of children participating in all the same online activities as other children, but lacking the ability to judge and interpret the way in which people they encounter on the net behave towards them. A question such as ‘What are you wearing?’ might immediately send warning signals to other children but may be answered as a matter of course by a Special Educational Needs pupil. Managing the privacy settings on a Facebook account can also prove difficult for some Special Educational Needs pupils. Filtering and blocking software does not address these sorts of risks.

“Along with the monitoring software, parents and carers will also be encouraged to contact the Stop it Now! Helpline if they have any concerns about their child’s safety. Trained staff will then be on hand to offer advice, information and support.”

If you would like to take part in the software monitoring trial at no cost, contact the Lucy Faithfull Foundation on 01372 847160 or email Wolvercote@lucyfaithfull.org.uk.

Surrey woman to run London marathon for local sexual abuse charity close to her heart, as government cuts hit the charity’s prevention work

April 12, 2013: After months of training Krystal Newbury, 32, an Administration Manager from Epsom, is going through final preparations for the London Marathon on Sunday, April 21st.

Krystal is raising funds for the Surrey based Lucy Faithfull Foundation and its Stop it Now! UK and Ireland Campaign and Helpline which work to prevent child sexual abuse – a charity very close to her heart.

The Foundation has been working to tackle child sexual abuse since 1992 and launched the Stop it Now! Campaign and Helpline in 2002. The Confidential Freephone Helpline, which operates from Surrey, is available for anyone with concerns about child sexual abuse. Due to a decision by the Department for Education to not provide funding to Stop it Now! England, the campaign now has limited capacity to deliver its successful sexual abuse prevention programme, Parents Protect!. The Helpline is also looking at cost-cutting measures despite a continued increase in demand for its services.

Krystal selected the Foundation and Stop it Now! as her chosen charity because tackling child sexual abuse and protecting children from harm is a subject very close to her heart. She said:

“Someone I know was sexually abused as a child and I have seen first-hand the impact it can have.  Being so close and seeing them live a daily battle is heartbreaking. I have struggled at times with feeling so angry about the trauma they have suffered, are still suffering and will always suffer. Knowing that I am helpless to say any words of comfort to help marginally soothe their pain is really hard.

“By raising money through running the London Marathon I want to help The Lucy Faithfull Foundation make a difference to the lives of others. The Foundation not only assists victims and the families of those affected, it also works to prevent child sexual abuse from happening in the first place.

“I’d also like every adult in Surrey to do just one thing to protect a child – that could be visiting the Parents Protect! website to get tips on keeping children safe or it could be talking to their child’s nursery or school about their child protection policies.”

Spokesperson for the Foundation and it’s Stop it Now! Campaign, Deborah Denis, said:

“Child sexual abuse is a real issue that affects around one in six children across the UK. In Surrey, this could mean at least 45,000 children are affected.

“While it is a problem that has always been around, recent media coverage of cases such as that of Jimmy Savile have brought it to the forefront of people’s minds. And while demand for our services, and crucially our Parents Protect! prevention programme, have never been greater, we unfortunately we don’t have the funds to meet the ever growing demand. That’s why support from people like Krystal is so greatly appreciated. She’s a fabulous supporter and we wish her all the very best for the Marathon which she has trained so hard for.”

Krystal originally set a target of raising £1000 but has already exceeded this and raised over £1800.

To make a donation in support of Krystal’s determination search for ‘Krystal Newbury Virgin Money Giving’ online or go to http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/fundraiser-web/fundraiser/showFundraiserProfilePage.action?userUrl=KrystalNewbury
